Business Law and Policy Program hosts "Beyond Wall Street: The Interplay Among Film, Business and the Law"

The past year has been an interesting time to be an observer of both events in the corporate and financial worlds and the response to these events in popular culture.  Corporate law scholars have long been cognizant of a cycle of scandal, response and regulation in our financial history.  One interesting and important aspect of that cycle is how films have sensitized the public to corporations' role in financial and other misconduct.  To further explore this role, the University of Illinois College of Law's Program in Business Law and Policy is hosting an invitation-only roundtable April 23-24, 2009 at our campus in Champaign, Illinois:  "Beyond Wall Street:  The Interplay Among Film, Business and Law."

Our goal is to have participants engage with the material and each other on a number of thought-provoking questions, including the following:  How do events in the financial world impact depictions of business in film?  How does film address legal aspects of business and finance?  How do business archetypes portrayed in film affect the regulation of business?  How does the artist's engagement with legal rules and business practices shape the depiction of law and commerce in film?

The Roundtable will feature seven discussion topics, each introduced by film excerpts.  To help them prepare for the Roundtable, participants have been given a list of films and two articles on how business has been portrayed in film:  Larry Ribstein's papers Wall Street & Vine and Imagining Wall Street,.

As an additional highlight, the Roundtable will coincide and integrate with Ebertfest (www.ebertfest.com), an annual film festival held in the Virginia Theater in downtown Champaign and hosted by Roger Ebert.
