Please join with us in congratulating the 12 students and their coaches on the College of Law's Phi Alpha Delta (PAD) Mock Trial Team for their strong performances at PAD's National Trial Competition on March 8-9. The College of Law sent three teams of four students--all 1Ls--to compete against 30 teams of mostly 2Ls and 3Ls from around the country.
Following three rounds of competition, the team consisting of Julia Brook, Heather Igoe, Michael Park, and John Sample advanced to the Final Round where they secured First Place with a strong finish against a strong team from Widener University. A second team consisting of Bide Akande, Jewel Hand, An Nguyen, and Lena Shapiro advanced to the 3rd/4th place round and were narrowly outscored (ten points out of 931) by a team from William Mitchell, taking home Fourth Place. A third team consisting of Charles Deutsch, John Motylinski, Pooja Ravisankar, and Juliana Yhee also performed extremely well, beating three teams of 3Ls, and finishing just eight points outside of the 3rd/4th place round. They finished in Seventh Place.
The team members were required to prepare and deliver opening statements and closing arguments; develop and conduct direct and cross examinations; convincingly play witness roles for their teammates; and, analyze and argue complex evidentiary issues and objections. The teams have been practicing since September 2012 and are coached by Sean Murphy and Lynn Kuznitz.
