Karen DeGrand, ’85, Installed as President of Appellate Lawyers Association

Karen DeGrand, ’85, was sworn in on June 19, 2012 as the 45th president of the Appellate Lawyers Association (ALA), an organization of Illinois lawyers whose practices are focused on the courts of review. Prior to being appointed president, she served as the organization’s vice president and as co-editor of its publication, The Brief.

DeGrand leads the appellate practice group at Donohue Brown Mathewson & Smyth LLC. She joined the firm in 1995 and was elected to partnership in 1998. She was previously with Baker & McKenzie, which she joined in 1985 after her graduation from the College of Law, where she was an associate editor of the University of Illinois Law Review. She received her undergraduate degree in Journalism from the University of Illinois where she was awarded Bronze Tablet, the University's highest recognition for academic excellence.
