National Law Journal Ranks Illinois Law in Annual Survey of “Go-To Law Schools”

Tuesday, March 06, 2012

In its annual ranking of “Go-To Law Schools,” the National Law Journal has ranked the University of Illinois College of Law 16th in the number of alumni associates promoted to partner in 2011. The College of Law tied with the University of Pennsylvania Law School and Emory University School of Law.

“Illinois graduates are a mainstay of our hiring every year. Illinois grads know what to expect from private practice. They hit the ground running as associates, and it is no surprise to me that they frequently become partners at terrific firms like Schiff Hardin,” said Matthew Fischer, Hiring Partner at Schiff Hardin LLP.

"Winston & Strawn has a long, successful recruiting relationship with Illinois. We actively seek out Illinois law graduates for many reasons. But principally, we consistently find Illinois candidates with an abundance of the core traits we seek: excellent analytical abilities, demonstrated academic success, and a healthy dose of common sense. We also find that Illinois candidates stay at the Firm throughout their career. Many of our Illinois recruits have become distinguished leaders and role models within the Firm, in the community, and in the profession," said Joseph Torres, Partner at Winston & Strawn.

Several of the law schools ranked in the Top 16 – including Harvard, Columbia, and Georgetown – graduate over twice as many students as the College of Law.

"Our graduates have been trained by world-class scholar-teachers in fields directly relevant to law firm practice. In the past three years, we have added two clinics and a host of externships, and we have bold plans to expand our practice-oriented courses in Chicago. We are confident that graduates of Illinois Law will continue to excel in the nation's premier law firms and in other settings in which they choose to practice," said Bruce Smith, Dean of the University of Illinois College of Law.

From 2003 alum, Jay Schleppenbach, who was recently made partner at Jenner & Block, we hear, "Any success I’ve had as an attorney I attribute to the excellent education I received at the College of Law and to its dedicated, world-class faculty. The College of Law taught me practical legal skills and intellectual approaches to legal problem solving that have helped me obtained excellent results for my clients both in and out of the courtroom."
