Professor Stone is a graduate of Columbia University School of Law, where he was on the board of revising editors for Columbia Law Review. Before joining the faculty, he was an Associate Professor at the Columbia University School of Law and had a civil litigation practice in Chicago. In addition to his faculty service, Professor Stone was the University’s Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1975-78.

A member of the Illinois Supreme Court Jury Instructions Committee for 17 years, Professor Stone has an exemplary record of professional and public service. He has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court and has served on a number of state commissions and as general counsel and president of the American Association of University Professors.

In 2002, Professor Stone was honored with the Roger Baldwin Award from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The award, named for the founder of the national ACLU organization, recognizes a lifetime commitment to civil liberties and is the highest honor given by the organization. In 2003, his achievements were recognized with the Elmer Gertz Award from the Illinois State Bar Association.

Over his career, Professor Stone has served numerous organizations including the Illinois State Bar Association, Illinois State Appellate Defender Commission, American Arbitration Association, and the Independent Voters of Illinois. He was a founding board member of the Champaign County American Civil Liberties Union, Champaign County Urban League, and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).
