Professor Berkson focuses his practice on international business transactions. He provides counsel for international companies, and on their behalf handles investment, acquisitions, dispositions, reorganizations, joint ventures, licensing and distribution arrangements that often encompass multiple jurisdictions. Professor Berkson is well versed in tax, international investment issues and legal and business concerns for investors. Among his clients are high tech companies, service companies and manufacturers. Professor Berkson has extensive experience in matters involving Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, many other countries in Latin America, South Africa, Israel, Western Europe and Asia. Numerous times in the past few years, Professor Berkson has been named one of the leading US advisors on Latin American tax issues by International Tax Review. Prior to joining DLA Piper in June, 2008, Professor Berkson was a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP focusing his practice on international business transactions in the firm's Tax Department and handling investment, acquisitions, dispositions, reorganizations, joint ventures, licensing and distribution arrangements. Professor Berkson is a frequent lecturer and has spoken on a variety of international tax and commercial topics. He also has been named as one of the leading U.S. advisors on Latin American tax by International Tax Review numerous times over the past few years.
He received his B.A. summa cum laude from the University of Illinois in 1977 and his J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1980. While in law school, Berkson served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review. He is also a certified public accountant and was awarded the Elijah Watts Sells Gold Medal for the highest score in the United States on the May 1977 Uniform Certified Public Accountants examination.
