Judge David G. Bernthal serves as the United States Magistrate Judge for the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois, a position he has held since 1995. As Magistrate Judge, Judge Bernthal handles most of the pre-trial matters in the cases referred to him by the district judges and makes recommendations to the district judges regarding the cases. He also serves as the Alternative Dispute ResolutionCoordinator for the Central District.
Upon graduation from Illinois law, Judge Bernthal served in private practice in Danville, Illinois from 1976-1987 and was an Associate Circuit Judge for the Fifth Judicial Circuit in Vermilion County from 1987-1995. He is a member of the Federal Magistrate Judges' Association and was the Seventh Circuit Representative on the Editorial Board of the Federal Courts Law Review.
A member of the Illinois National Guard, Judge Bernthal has served as President of the Danville and Champaign Rotary Clubs, United Way Board of Directors and Division Chair, American Red Cross Board of Directors and Building Fund Chair, Danville Area Community College Foundation board member, Lakeview Medical Center Foundation Board of Directors, Salvation Army Men's Advisory Board, Danville Zoning Committee, and the Illinois State Bar Association Assembly.
Judge Bernthal earned his B.A. with high honors as a Solon E. Summerfield Scholar in Political Science from the University of Illinois in 1972 and his J.D. from the College of Law in 1976.
