Professor McDade, Curator of Law Rare Books, received his JD from Case Western Reserve University and his MSLIS from the University of Illinois. Aside from teaching Legal Research at the College of Law (and writing the Legal Research column for Student Lawyer magazine), he also teaches Rare Books, Crime & Punishment. This is the only class on the subject of crimes against rare books, maps, documents and other printed "cultural heritage resources." His book on the subject, The Book Thief: The True Crimes of Daniel Spiegelman, is the first to deal with the recognition of books as cultural objects whose value cannot be adequately captured by market price. He continues to write in this area.
Professor McDade serves on the editorial boards of The Journal of Art Crime and Library and Archival Security. He has lectured extensively and appeared on radio and television (C-SPAN's BookTV) discussing the subject. Informally, he writes about these crimes on his blog, Upward Departure.
